closed shop
A system of trade-union job control in which getting and holding employment is contingent on being a member of the union either before entry or on engagement. Pre-entry shops require union membership before a worker can be hired; post-entry and agency shops require workers to become members after taking up employment. Now illegal as such in the United States, Britain, and some European societies (on the grounds that compulsory membership is an infringement of civil rights ), closed shops are nevertheless not without advantages to employers as a device for informal management of labour relations. Consequently, there are several forms of union-management agreement (UMA) which constitute a closed shop in all but name.
